There are many levels of Reflux in babies varying from a mild version to a very severe reflux that requires medication. The treatment has to be dictated by the level of Reflux and therefore, it is very important to seek the advice of a medical practitioner before you change any aspect of your baby’s feeding routine.
In some cases using a thickened formula may help reduce the symptoms of Infant Reflux. These feeds still contain everything the regular feeds contain to promote healthy growth and development. Some formulas become thickened when you make up the feed, others thicken on contact with the acid in the tummy. In our opinion if your baby is on Zantac or Losec you should use a pre-thickened formula as other formulas require acid in the tummy to activate the thickening process. As these medications neutralise/reduce the amount of acid in the tummy the formulas may not thicken to the required consistency.
In milder cases of Reflux a Comfort formula may be suitable as these formulas are slightly thickened. If your baby has mild reflux, this is a good first step. You can always take a further step up the treatment ladder if necessary.
If you are using a formula that thickens when made up, you should always adjust the teat size to allow baby to feed without difficulty.
It’s important to note that you should not use another feed thickener (Gaviscon/Carobel) with these feeds.
